Messa in latino e concerto per la Domenica dopo l’Epifania presso la Cattedrale di Brescia – Duomo vecchio (vedi l’album fotografico). La messa sarà celebrata in Vetus Ordo e seguiranno alcuni brani devozionali a tematica natalizia.

La musica in programma eseguita dagli studenti del Dipartimento a seguito del Workshop «In excelso throno», Palestrina fra Rinascimento e Barocco (del Progetto #PalestrinaRitrovato) avrà un particolare focus sull’opera di Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Giovanni Matteo Asola, Floriano Canale, su canto piano e altro repertorio polifonico da stampe e manoscritti dei secc. XVI-XVI.

The programme delves into the profound connections between spiritual devotion and the emotive power of music across the centuries. It will explore how the dual themes of love and faith have been intertwined in musical compositions, reflecting the depth of human passion and the enduring nature of spiritual belief.

Even the Holy Scriptures have consistently served as a source of inspiration for modes of expression that have historically been unified according to a precise artistic canon that has been developed over centuries, whereby the Word is expressed through Sound. The liturgy and its texts have thus become another essential driving force behind the most diverse and significant musical forms and genres.

Through the sensitivity of the performer, these forms and genres are able to describe the admirable intertwining of the human and the divine, giving it ‘voice’ not only in the great cathedrals, but also in the quiet and intimate atmosphere of the domestic spaces such as the nineteenth-century salotto. Traversing the rich landscape of sacred and secular works, we celebrate the universal expressions of the soul’s deepest affections and its journey toward the divine.

From liturgical and musicological research comes, therefore, a musical excursus showcasing the secular and sacred repertoire in Italian and Latin, juxtaposing the 15th-century roughness with the rich polyphonic weavings of the Renaissance and the elegant artifices of the early Italian Baroque. This evocative itinerary will lead the audience into the most contemplative – dimension in which the voice often lets itself go in broad melismas that, more than words, capture and metaphysically embody the inner peregrinatio of the secular poetry along with the personal meditation suggested by the sacred texts.

Le Sacre Scritture hanno da sempre ispirato modalità espressive che unissero, secondo un preciso canone artistico sviluppato nei secoli, la Parola al Suono. La liturgia e i suoi testi sono divenuti, così, il principale propulsore delle forme e dei generi musicali più variegati e significativi che, attraverso la sensibilità del Musicus et Cantor, potessero descrivere il mirabile intreccio fra l’umano e il divino, dandogli “voce” non solo nelle grandi cattedrali, ma anche nella quieta ed intima atmosfera dei sacelli e degli spazi domestici.

Dalla ricerca liturgica e musicologica scaturisce, dunque, un excursus musicale che mostri il repertorio sacro e devozionale in latino e in volgare affiancando alle ruvidezze quattrocentesche i ricchi intrecci polifonici rinascimentali, gli eleganti artifici e gli sfarzosi virtuosismi del primo barocco italiano. Tale suggestivo itinerario condurrà il pubblico all’interno della dimensione privata – segreta e più contemplativa – in cui spesso la voce si lascia andare a melismi ampi che, più delle parole, colgono e metafisicamente incarnano la peregrinatio interiore e la meditazione personale suggerita dal testo sacro.

Network & Artists in residence

Palma Choralis has embarked on numerous international partnerships over the years to deliver musical and cultural projects: the University of Massachusetts · Department of Music and Dance, the Five College Early Music Programme and Mount Holyhoke College (Massachusetts-USA, 2016-present).

In 2024, SEMC will have the honour of hosting international artists in residence, thanks to the help and generosity of the municipality of Sarteano, the mayor Francesco Landi and Nadia Straccali.

Jamie-Rose Guarrine (Soprano), a member of the Massachusetts National Association of Teachers of Singers, with an incredible career as an accomplished interpreter of Mozart opera, has performed in some of the world’s most renowned theatres and with famous orchestras, including Los Angeles Opera, Minnesota Opera, The Santa Fe Opera, Opera Philadelphia, Chicago Opera Theater, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, The National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica, and the Santa Fe Symphony.

Karl Knapp (Cello), a dedicated and active Suzuki educator with over twenty years of teaching experience, also has a rich background in solo and chamber music performances. He recently served as Principal Cellist with the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Arctic Chamber Orchestra and the Juneau Symphony Orchestra. He has performed with the Madison Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Madison Opera Orchestra, and Minnesota Opera Orchestra, among many others.

In addition to being artists in residence, Marcello Mazzetti (Lute, Tenor, Contrappunto alla mente) and Livio Ticli (Harpsichord, Hautecontre, Ornamentation) will serve as directors and course instructors at the campus. They are musicologists and performers who have been invited as guests to American and European universities and who teach at conservatoires, universities, and academies in Italy (Universities of Padua and Turin, Academies of Bologna and Venice, Conservatoires of Genoa and Brescia, ISTIMA · Italian Institute of Early Music). For more than twenty years, they have jointly directed research, teaching, and performance projects spanning the Renaissance and Baroque periods for Palma Choralis® and other prestigious ensembles, with concerts, masterclasses, and lectures in Italy, Europe (Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Hungary), Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Il concerto propone una selezione di musiche di autori, soprattutto bresciani, le cui opere sono state dimenticate e recentemente riscoperte affiancandole a quelle di musicisti più noti del Rinascimento e del Barocco italiano e tedesco. L’ascoltatore potrà vivere così un viaggio sonoro attraverso le più belle pagine musicali del passato cogliendo l’occasione per assaporare inedite fusioni di voci e strumenti dell’epoca insieme ad un repertorio tutto da scoprire. Alcune delle composizioni che verranno eseguite sono infatti attualmente oggetto di una collana di incisioni che vuole proporre un percorso di riscoperta di questi «tesori musicali bresciani».

From 9 to 11 December 2022, the international conference “Early Music Pedagogy Then and Now. From the Classical Antiquity to the Renaissance” will be held in Brescia at the Auditorium of the Diocesan Cultural Centre (via Bollani 20, Brescia). For the occasion, about forty speakers from the best universities and conservatories in the world will gather to present the results of research in the field of historical musical pedagogy, to answer the question: how was music taught between Classical Antiquity and the Renaissance? The topic will include early music teaching methodologies between past and present to discover how much of these methodologies can today be recovered to perform the music of the past in a conscious manner and according to a historically informed practice.

Brescia, thanks to the international activities carried out since 2015 by the Early Music Department “Città di Brescia” directed by M° Marcello Mazzetti and M° Livio Ticli, becomes a global hub for innovative projects in the field of historically informed Renaissance and Baroque teaching and performance, rediscovering the invaluable heritage of composers who made the city one of the European capitals of music at the time.

The symposium is open to everyone, musicologists, performers, and music teachers and aims to reassess the role of music pedagogy as a bridge between historical research and performance practice, applying this discussion to today’s challenges of music education and reshaping modern pedagogical reflection. It will represent the convergence between musicological studies and practical music and is particularly aimed at students of Music Conservatories and High Schools, as well as teachers since participation is valid for staff updating.

During the three days of talks, the public will also be given the opportunity to attend a free concert – a lecture-recital scheduled for Saturday 10 December at 6 pm given by the Canadian lutenist Stanislas Germain (McGill University).

“Harmony of the Spheres.
Lute Music Stories of the Renaissance”
According to a very ancient world view, music is in harmony with the whole universe. Planets and stars emit sounds as they move creating together a symphony. This celestial music is
refected in the human soul, but only a faint memory remains after we are born. During the Renaissance, a few musicians have elevated their art to such perfection that led their public to a state of deep trance reawakening the memory of this celestial music. Legends tell of the influence of that music on decisions made by kings in several courts. Harmony had the power to bring peace, but also to cause war.

Conference Abstract
In the past few decades, scholars have increasingly shown an interest in investigating historical sources in relation to music teaching, exploring new ground for an extended discussion on teaching practices of the past. Similarly, the early music education of today is fostering a fruitful dialogue within the scholarly community. Within this strand of research, a central role is played by the re-evaluation of mnemonics, the reconsideration of theoretical sources, composition and analysis of music notation as descriptive and non-prescriptive elements.

Both practitioners’ and scholars’ perspectives become crucial to rethink contents and methodology of early music pedagogy because investigating historical sources through a pedagogical lens reveals the necessary knowledge to teach a specific topic or a music skill. As recent studies suggest that recreating historical methods of improvisation is a form of reverse engineering, performance can be considered as both an embodied knowledge and a learning process through practice. Indeed, researching historical pedagogy can inform modern pedagogy and practice, just as modern pedagogy and practice can inform historical research.

The conference explores the multicultural mosaic of early music education, by pinpointing any affinity or difference in the way music was taught and learnt across Europe (Western and Eastern) and the Mediterranean area. This perspective covers Classical Antiquity, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (until 1650) and the subject of investigation includes chant, vocal/instrumental and sacred/secular music, dance, and theatre.
